Diva Wonderkamer
The new Antwerp diamond museum DIVA opened its first temporary exhibition called ‘Room of Wonder I: Axel Vervoordt’.  As a guest curator Axel Vervoordt submerges the visitor into a wondrous world by presenting naturalia, jewellery and exotica together with Old Masters and contemporary art.

One of the most precious objects from this exhibition is a coconut owl goblet made in Antwerp in 1549. It passed through Axel Vervoordt’s hands on several occasions before it was acquired by the King Baudouin Foundation who gave it on permanent loan to DIVA. It’s a magical object that served most probably as a prize at rhetoricians contests in secret society.  The poetic inscription on the edge reads: “als alle ander vogels sin thoe neste, so is min flige beste (when all the other birds are resting on their nest, my flying is the best).
For this ‘Wonderkamer’, Axel Vervoordt selected artworks from his own collection, but also from various private collections and from museums like the MAS, the Groeningemuseum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. “This Room of Wonder is meant to make us ‘wonder’, to inspire us, to make us discover things that surprise and fascinate. Personally, I always try to look at art with the eyes of a child, without prejudices or prior knowledge, and I like to be surprised by that which my senses intuitively tell me.’

‘Wonderkamer I: Axel Vervoordt’ from 19.10.2018 until 28.04.2019.
Open every day, except Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.
