Axel Vervoordt is pleased to participate in the ninth edition of TEFAF New York at the Park Avenue Armory, which takes place on May 11-16, 2023, with an invitation-only preview on May 11th.
Our presentation will include major works by artists such as Chiyu Uemae, Anish Kapoor, Kimsooja, Takis, and several others, along with a selection of exquisite antiquities. One of the highlights is a large, very fine sandstone head of a deity (likely a Buddha) with the features of Jayavarman VII, arguably the most important ruler of the Khmer Empire in ancient Cambodia. The benign smile and serene expression give us an idea of what it must be like to experience true enlightenment.
Centuries later, Anish Kapoor managed to achieve a similar transcendent quality in his Untitled work. As he himself explains it: "The idea is to make an object which is not an object, to make a hole in the space, to make something which actually does not exist. Even more, the extraordinary appearance, loved and feared, of a piece of void, at once finite and infinite, reactivates the symbolic contact between inside and outside, earth and heaven, male and female, active and passive, conceptual and physical, thus renewing the process of knowing."
