Art Basel Hong Kong 2024
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Fair description
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to present a curated group exhibition dedicated to community-based art by the gallery’s artists. Engaging with broad ideas related to cultural democracy, artists including El Anatsui, Sopheap Pich, Kimsooja, Jaffa Lam, Bosco Sodi, and Angel Vergara, demonstrate how their artistic practices have participated in community-building activities by addressing common social issues and challenges that people experience around the world. The work of these artists blurs the boundaries between high and low cultures to show how art may be accepted by diverse audiences. They act as catalysts to evoke positive changes within their communities at both regional and international levels.

Kimsooja, Thread Routes – Chapter IV
Art Basel’s Film Sector, Room N101B, Level 1, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Thursday 28 March 2024, 5:50pm - 6:50pm Free public access. Limited seating.
“Thread Routes” (2010-2019) is Kimsooja’s first 16mm series, after having spent more than three decades contextualising and conceptualising textiles as a canvas that supports a structural investigation of human life, nature, and the world. For Art Basel’s Film Sector, curated by Li Zhenhua, the artist showcases Chapter IV of the series, which was filmed in China in 2014. Kimsooja encountered the specific weaving, dyeing, and garment culture of the Miao minority in the Guizhou, Hainan, and Yunnan provinces. These are depicted alongside elaborate silver adornment and paper making as well as the ancient local housing structures in Fujian, the rice terraces of Yunnan, and the landscapes of Guizhou and Hainan.
