Yuko Nasaka, In Pursuit of Infinity
Booth 1C26, Insights sector
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to present a solo booth by Japanese artist Yuko Nasaka (b. 1938, Osaka) for the Insights sector at Art Basel in Hong Kong 2023, focusing on her ever-evolving oeuvre spanning five decades from 1964 to 2015. Nasaka joined the influential Gutai Art Association in 1963 and became a key member of the group’s second-generation activities. In Japan’s rapid economic expansion in the 1960s, Nasaka used cutting-edge industrial materials in combination with the traditional technology of the turning pottery wheel, resulting in a unique and new visual language in accordance with Gutai’s famous motto — “Do what has never been done before!”
Jaffa Lam. Trolley Party
EN2, Encounters sector
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to present Hong Kong artist Jaffa Lam’s (b. 1973) ambitious, site-specific installation, “Trolley Party” (2023) in Art Basel’s Encounters sector. Hovering in the air, the socially engaged installation consists of a 14-metre-patchwork made of recycled umbrella fabric, where it connects with the extensions of six sculptures made of industrial trolleys that Lam transformed into chairs. Described by Lam as “an art fair oasis”, it demonstrates the issues of labour, identity, and collectiveness of the city. The grand-scale patchwork was sewn together by artist and female workers from the Hong Kong Women Workers' Association during the participative workshops in Spring 2023.
