Expo Chicago
Chicago, Navy Pier
Fair description
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to announce a debut participation at Expo Chicago, which will be held at Navy Pier from September 19-22, 2019. The gallery will present works by Norio Imai, a solo stand that explores the Japanese artist’s experimental practices from the 1960s onwards. The selection of works include installation, performance, painting, and film.
Imai’s practice has never been confined to the limits of the canvas. The exhibited works explore this boundary-testing through various artistic media. Gutai works, “White Ceremony / Diamond A & Diamond B” (1966) are presented in dialogue with works from the forthcoming decade: “Two Heartbeats of Mine” (1976) — a kinetic sound sculpture consisting of two speakers projecting a recording of the artist’s heartbeats, and the video documentation, “Floor” (1972), produced and broadcasted as part of television station project.
The presentation also integrates recent paintings that show Imai’s conceptual investigations of white relief works.
Axel Vervoordt Gallery also published the catalogue from the exhibition Norio Imai – White Event in 2013 (143pages)
