Fair description
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to participate in the launch of Frieze Viewing Room, an online edition of Frieze New York 2020, with “A Return to Home”, a solo exhibition of Chung Chang-Sup (Cheongju, 1927 – Seoul, 2011), a prominent member of the Korean art movement Dansaekhwa. To create the gallery’s presentation for Frieze’s new digital initiative, gallery director Boris Vervoordt chose to install the artworks in the Vlaeykensgang, the gallery’s historic original home and where he also lives.
“In the midst of our global communal quarantine, we’ve returned home for safety,” Vervoordt says. “The home is part of our story and our history. The Vlaeykensgang is a series of medieval alleyways and 16th-century buildings, which is the location I chose when founding the gallery in 2011. It’s a place that my father discovered in 1969 and saved from demolition. Bringing Chung Chang-Sup’s works here is a return to our origin and a reminder of the importance of living with art in an acutely personal way. The artist is better with us here. To create a virtual fair for Frieze, rather than presenting the works in a white box or on view from a warehouse, I wanted to deepen the reminder to find safety and inspiration at home.”
