Fair description
Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to announce our inaugural participation at Independent Art Fair 2021. Our stand features three works by Bosco Sodi that pay homage to constructivist painter Kazimir Malevich.
"When Malevich painted Black Square, the world was in chaos. It was the middle of the First World War and there was continuing unrest following the 1905 Russian revolution that in 1917 would explode into the Bolshevik uprising and October Revolution.
Now in these turbulent, fraught, and interesting times, I want to create an homage to Malevich with three uniquely shaped canvases, all black, each one a different geometric figure. For me, they have an elemental and spiritual significance that talks about the supremacy of colour, shape, and in this particular case of texture – to emphasise the paintings as objects, with systems of fissures throughout the surface that are intentional but not controlled. In the end, these paintings are about emptiness and form, darkness and perception, sorrow and hope."
