Fair description
Axel Vervoordt is pleased to participate in the first-ever Masterpiece Online, a collaborative effort between the annual London fair and Artsy. Titled ‘La vie de Château, ’s Gravenwezel’, our presentation includes a variety of works curated by Axel from the family’s castle where he has been living and working since 1984.
The selection features an intimate drawing by French impressionist Paul César Helleu (1859 - 1927), showing his wife and son on a family boat trip, as well as an exquisite pair of chests of drawers by the Italian woodworker Francesco Bogliè (active ca. 1769 - ca. 1825). Reminiscent of an age that was highly influenced by the rediscovery of Roman masterpieces from the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the vibrant color and skillfully executed ornamentation attest to a level of craftsmanship that is beyond fashion.
Additional highlights include a 15th century limewood statue of Saint Sebastian, a Roman martyr who became venerated as a protector against the plague in Medieval times, and a still-life by the enigmatic Italian master Pseudo Fardella.
