Fair description
Axel Vervoordt Gallery will participate in the first edition of West Bund Art & Design Online from 2 to 15 November 2020. For the occasion, the gallery will curate a selection of paintings and sculpture works by Chung Chang-Sup, Lucia Bru, and Yuko Nasaka, and install them in the physical space in Hong Kong, for the online fair’s duration.
In the course of this special time of travel restrictions, the gallery determined to join the fair’s digital initiative while installing the work in the physical gallery space in Hong Kong for the local collectors and gallery visitors. This combination of online and offline exhibition emphasises our brief presence in the physical experience of appreciating artworks in the concept of time and space, as well as reinforces our fascination with art and culture from both the East and the West.
In addition to works by Belgium artist Lucia Bru (b. 1970, Brussels) and Japanese Gutai artist Yuko Nasaka (b. 1938, Osaka), who will both have major presentations with the gallery in Hong Kong in November, the gallery will showcase three paintings by Chung Chang-Sup (1927, Cheongju – 2011, Seoul), one of the most prominent artists associated with the Korean minimalism movement called Dansaekhwa. He developed a highly personal technique of using Korean tak fibre, made of the inner bark of paper mulberry, a tree and plant species native to Asia. For the fair, the gallery will showcase works from his most important series Tak and Meditation.
