New exhibition: Tsuyoshi Maekawa

Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Japanese artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa at Kanaal. This exhibition includes works from the 1970s to 2019, and some of the recent works will be presented in public for the first time. Maekawa has achieved great diversity in his practice through process and repetition: sewing, folding, cutting, tearing, processing and colouring textiles, jute, hemp, and cotton.
True to a Gutai nature, Maekawa has consistently explored the performative nature of art-making, the three-dimensionality of painting, and works made from industrial materials. In the many decades post-Gutai, an interesting evolution is present, from delicate and subtle folds to painted wrinkles and shadows. In an unpublished interview two years ago, the artist said of his recent expressions: “I’m constantly changing. This area is new, but it is what it is. It’s trial and error.”
