Renato Nicolodi's architectural works, be they paintings, sculptures or videos, offer a platform for the spectator's reflections and contemplations through their classical austerity and evoking emptiness. An interplay of stairs, corridors, colonnades, overlaps and contrasts between light and dark leads the viewer's gaze to that central void, referencing human architectural history along the way. This makes Nicolodi's works both archetypal and universal, addressing questions about how we perceive our heritage and collective history. In this series of new works he will show in Hong Kong, he re-explores his artistic vocabulary, including making sculptural reliefs out of paper. Here too, contrasts are inherent: the delicate suppleness of the material versus the robust structure of the architectural.
