Sopheap Pich at Axel Vervoordt Gallery Hong Kong

News content

Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to present the inaugural solo exhibition of Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich (b. 1971) at its Hong Kong location. This new collection of twelve works reflects the current societal conditions and historical context of Cambodia while paying homage to nature through wall reliefs and glass sculptures. The wall reliefs evoke the imagery of corrugated roofs, utilizing recycled aluminum and found rice pots to portray the everyday urban landscape of the country. Additionally, a hanging sculpture resembling lungs is crafted from glass, bamboo strips, and copper, highlighting the potential of diverse materials. Pich's creations delve into the essence of materiality, serving as a confluence of his labor-intensive artistic process and connecting the past, present, and future of Cambodia.
